Honeybee Solar Energy is a 3,273 acre, 300 MWAC solar PV facility located just outside the town of Alberta in Brunswick County, Virginia.
The project will use timber land and preserve open agriculture land for continued cultivation. The site was acquired under long-term lease agreements for solar electricity power generation with multiple landowners. The project received a Conditional Use Permit from Brunswick County in December 2023. The project is currently conducting environmental studies and permitting activities, including a wetlands delineation, a threatened and endangered species review, and a cultural, archaeological, and historical review.
The project will use bi-facial solar modules with high-efficiency PV cells that are optimized for utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects. Central inverters will minimize operations and maintenance costs and improve the efficiency of the overall plant. The modules will be mounted to a single-axis tracking system that is optimized for use with bi-facial panels to increase the system’s capacity factor.
The project will interconnect to Dominion’s 500 kV transmission system that traverses the site. The project filed an interconnection application with PJM in September 2021 (Queue Position AH1–528). The project is expected to sign its Interconnection Services Agreement in late 2026.
